1. a foot in English verse consisting of two accented syllables. Example (in the first three metrical feet): Rocks´, caves´, /lakes´, fens´,/bogs´, dens´,/and shades´/of death´ (Milton).
2. a foot in Greek and Latin verse consisting of two long syllables. Example: hērōs.
